Evidently, children's eyes should be checked before the age of 3... that's right, age three. The brain and the eyes are communicating and trying to work everything out from 18 months to 3 years, so that by age 3, the brain has already made adjustments to correct for poor vision, thereby sometimes causing irreversible damage. With each passing year, the development of the visual system is more complete and cannot be changed. I don't really know if this applies to your basic near sightedness and farsightedness but there are other vision problems that can certainly be repaired if caught early enough. Wow, this is maybe the first time that I'm actually educating my readers, all two of you that actually have children young enough to benefit from this fabulous advice. :)
It's hard to tell how Priya feels about being the only other person in her class to wear glasses. The other little girl is a friend of hers from Kindergarten, so today she went to her for advice. The girl shared with Priya that glasses can sometimes get caught in your hair when you put them on or take them off and also, she said, "They make you not look beautiful". I really hope that despite the fact that her two closest friends don't want her to get glasses that her new look will be accepted and even embraced by her peeps. She did go with their advice of staying away from frames that were too round. Let's see... I think overall she's excited about wearing them even though she's convinced the people in her class will no longer recognize her.
It was fun shopping for the new eye-wear with Priya, especially after we returned Sanjay back home because he just doesn't know how to behave well in public. The glasses have been ordered and will be ready in about a week, but here's a sneak preview and summary of our shopping:

Well, you can tell Priya that I once bought glasses (no prescription) just to have "the look" because I thought glasses were so cool. And you can tell her that when Ethan got his eyes checked, he was actually disappointed that he did not need glasses, he wanted them so badly! And remember, Harry Potter wears glasses and he is SOOOO cute and SOOOO smart!

I think I fall into the category of ones that need to be educated....I had no idea they should have their eyes checked so early or the tests at school were sub-par. Thank you for teaching me today Mrs. Natarajan.
BTW, laughing about Sanjay and public places. Ha! Only funny because I got corrected by an older woman at Walmart yesterday for Tyden's stellar behavior :)
I couldnt help but notice that Priya has big smile when posing with her favorite ones. It looks like Mommy's favorite was the winner?
Mom would have to correct me if I am wrong but I believe that I started wearing glasses as early as 2 1/2 or something like that... Because I remember mom telling the story that she asked the doctor "How am I going to keep glasses on a two year old child?" And the Doctors reply to her was.. "He will see so much better that he won't want to take them off." Come to find out he was right or so mom says.

Love the glasses. I need to get the name of the eye doctor due to a scamming I was part of 3 years ago...Caroline keeps saying she needs glasses (again!) and I need to be a good mom and follow through with a good eye doctor..not one who justs wants my money!
Brandon just got glasses too. He was very excited about getting his and loves to wear them. He is nearsighted and is now happy that he can see the board at school.
and I got bifocals :(

Interesting post.... My older son's eye screening just came back abnormal at his preschool so we are taking him in (he's 4). In retrospect I wish I had taken him in a lot earlier because I have terrible eyes. I'm definitely getting the younger one into the eye doctor much earlier.

p.s. The hearing tests at school are also not the greatest (Conor passed his as well for 2 years, even the one days AFTER it was discovered by a private audiologist he needed hearing aids!)!
Amy, the ones we bought actually look like the ones I liked, but they aren't. We tried those on at a different place, but they are oddly similar to the ones I liked originally. So, that worked out just fine. :)
Laura, I didn't know you were reading. Where's your blog? Your boys are at the perfect age for all this documenting. :) Are you still part-time at work? I saw on FB that you were shifting to that a while back.
Kristi, do you know if the ears should be checked at a young age, too? I feel like a slacker mom.
Conor was checked after each of his treatments and they came back ok (when he was young), so I would think hearing is better judged at a later age, like now for Priya (and Lauren, whom I have yet to have to an audiologist even though I know better (-: FYI, several ear infections at a young age can cause a hearing loss too (according to the professionals I've spoken with).
Ooh! So glad you posted all that info! I had no idea. I'll be going to find an eyedoc for Peter this summer (he's 3 in Jan)...
